Advanced H.264 Video Compression Technology Now Available on Texas Instruments Digital Signal Processors

WWComs' H.264 Codec Can Simultaneously Encode and Decode on a Single DSP, Offering Unprecedented Bandwidth Efficiency and Exceptional Picture Quality

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Aug. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Meeting the needs of a marketplace that is rapidly migrating to digital media technology, WWComs, Inc. today announced the launch of its new H.264 Baseline Profile codec (BC-264), which delivers simultaneous encoding and decoding while consuming less than 50 percent of the processing power on a single TMS320DM642 DSP-based digital media processor. The BC-264 codec provides a robust solution for two- way visual communication and meets the H.264 video coding standard established by the International Telecommunications Union.

WWComs developed the BC-264 codec primarily for IP-based video conferencing, IP-based videophones, smart phones and mobile devices, where low latency and exceptional video quality are essential. It will simultaneously encode and decode with a constant or variable bit rate range of 64kbs to 4 Mbps. The BC-264 offers full support for NTSC and PAL with frame rates of 30fps and 25fps respectively.

The IP-network based, two-way video communication reference design is available today. It consists of two embedded hardware terminals, software developer kit, optimized networking stack, integrated audio and the BC-264 codec. For more information, visit http://www.wwcoms.com/ .

"The BC-264 codec is the most efficient and flexible solution for two-way visual communication available today," said James W. Liu, chief technology officer and chairman of WWComs. "Perfecting the H.264 codec for the DM642 digital media processor requires both embedded DSP and video expertise. The decision to focus WWComs' development efforts on TI's DM64x generation was based on its superior architecture and TI's unparalleled third party development support."

"This codec solution addresses a range of customer needs and will help them achieve faster time-to-market and reduce overall system cost," said Pradeep Bardia, video telephony solutions marketing manager, TI. "It will also accelerate the adoption of H.264 video compression technology in the marketplace."
